Winter CSA 2024, Week 2

Farm News

Many people who aren’t growing their own food assume we take time off when winter rolls around. Of course, our CSA members know better, because you’re enjoying the fruits of our labor with your shares. As four-season growers, we don’t really take a break, though the work does change with each season, and winter tends to be a more restful time. The days are shorter, which means Ben comes inside earlier than usual, and we get a chance to reflect on the year together. Right now, we’re diving into seed catalogs—they’ve been trickling in for the past month or so. It’s such a treat to dream of spring and summer while sitting in the comfort of our cozy kitchen. And I have to say, aside from the weather-related chaos that kicked off the fall season (and the technical glitch at the end), this whole year has been amazing!

For 2024, we made the decision to focus almost entirely on our CSA. We took a big leap, deciding we could double our membership, step away from markets, and hire more help. We’re shifting toward working smarter, not harder, and your support has been a huge part of making that possible! You’re not just supporting a family farm—you’re also helping create opportunities for the folks who work with us, who will go on to grow good food, build community, and spread that knowledge to other places. As Wendell Berry says, “Eating is an agricultural act.”

Your CSA membership may not change the world in a big, dramatic way, and it’s not going to earn anyone a Nobel Peace Prize—but it does make a real difference. And not just for us, but for all the farmers who are working to improve the health of our soil and our communities. It also supports other small businesses, which is a much more meaningful connection than shopping at anonymous markets. Many wise people, like Wendell Berry and Robin Wall Kimmerer, have said it better than I can, but the point is this: Sometimes things can be that simple. We can eat food with people, grow connections, and find joy in the process.

So, thank you for your support and for all the ways you bring joy and goodwill to our community. I haven’t met all of you yet, but for the ones I have, I can honestly say I’m proud to know you and to be a part of your community.
